Where Do Beagles Come From?
Beagles are believed to have originated in England as far back as the 11th century. Their name may come from the French word be’geule, which refers to the sound they make while hunting. And, oh yes, beagles are famously vocal! During World War II, beagles weren’t typically used in the military – but one brave beagle named Bingo (yes, really!) reportedly helped American soldiers detect landmines in Italy by sniffing the ground ahead of them. Though details are a little foggy (and may be part legend), the story of Bingo is often shared in dog-lover circles as an example of the breed’s loyalty and bravery.
Are Beagles Good Pets?
In a word: yes. Beagles are friendly, curious, and gentle. They’re great with kids and other dogs, but they do need exercise – and their strong sense of smell can lead them into mischief if not supervised. Beagles are also known to be stubborn, especially when they catch a scent and decide to follow it no matter what you say.
